FOR leading Jose Rizal University to victory over erstwhile unbeaten San Beda, Paolo Pontejos has been named NCAA player of the Week by scribes covering the league.
The Bombers dealt the Lions their only loss of the first round, with Pontejos matching his season-high with 27 points including five triples, on top of four assists, and three rebounds.
It was the Heavy Bombers’ first win over the Red Lions since the second round of Season 90.
The 24-year-old Pontejos also bounced back from a horrendous four-point outing against the Arellano University Chiefs earlier in the week.
With JRU down by 12 points in the final frame, Pontejos scored eight points and dished out two assists, including a pass to Tey Teodoro for the go-ahead triple, in a fiery 20-2 rally to close-out the game.
That performance earned Pontejos the Accel Quantum Plus-3XVI NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week citation.
“Pagpasok ko, tambak kami pero sabi ko sa mga teammates ko, ‘never give up,’” the JRU senior said. “Sa defense, kailangan lang namin trumabaho para tumagal kami sa loob.”
The 5-foot-7 guard hopes the win would help ignite the fire in the Heavy Bombers.
“Hopefully, ito na yun kasi San Beda ang tinalo namin. Sila ang unang malakas na team na tinalo namin sa first round,” he shared. “Sa second round, trabaho lang. “
“One game at a time.”
Pontejos was picked by the scribes over Perpetual’s Gab Dagangon, Lyceum’s Mike Nzeusseu, and Arellano’s Jiovani Jalalon.
