JIOVANI Jalalon carried Arellano in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs beat the San Beda Red Lions, 88-84, on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Jalalon came up with 22 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals to help the Chiefs tighten their hold of fourth place with a 6-3 win-loss card.
The Red Lions had their four-game winning streak snapped but stayed in second place with a 7-2 record in a tie with University of Perpetual Help.
“It’s a big win. I told them to play their best, sacrifice their bodies for Ola (Adeogun), Donald (Tankoua), and Art (de la Cruz),” said Arellano coach Jerry Codinera.
Dioncee Holts had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals for the Chiefs, who came up with a 16-7 run in the final period to pull away, 84-73, in the duel of last year’s finalists.
Donald Tankoua had 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Dan Sara added 16 points for the five-time defending champion Red Lions, who only got 11 points from Art de la Cruz.
Ola Adeogun had 10 points for San Beda, breaking the glass door in the San Beda dugout at halftime in frustration, with the Red Lions down, 37-41.
