TNT Katropa guard and former NCAA MVP Jayson Castro believes Arellano's Jio Jalalon is ripe for the PBA.
The former Gilas Pilipinas point guard believes the potential and talent is there for Jalalon, and all the Chiefs’ guard needs is a little adjustment to his game when he enters the pro league.
"Nandun na pero syempre pagdating ng PBA, madami pa siyang ia-adjust," Castro told SPIN.ph on Thursday while the former Gilas Pilipinas stalwart watched the NCAA games from ringside.
"Nasa kanya naman 'yung potential. Nasa kanya naman 'yung kung paano iwo-work yun," he added.
Comparisons between Castro and Jalalon are no longer new as fans on social media point out similarities between the two with their speed and uncanny scoring.
Jalalon is even considered one of Castro’s possible Gilas successors, although he has begged off from joining the Gilas 5.0 team to the Fiba Asia Challenge Cup to focus on Arellano’s NCAA campaign.
For his part, Castro said everyone in the cadets side, including Jalalon, are capable of being the next top point guard of the national team.
"Siyempre madami naman sila dun mga cadets, especially Kiefer (Ravena), Rayray (Parks), madaming mga players na naglalaro sa D-League," he said.
But Castro believes Gilas coach Tab Baldwin will be able to bring out the best in Jalalon.
"Si Jio, siguro marami silang matututunan from Coach Tab," he said. "The way na natutunan ko kay Coach Tab yung experience tsaka 'yung the way na magturo si coach, matututo ka na dun eh."
Castro was a surprise visitor in the NCAA games despite his alma mater Philippine Christian University no longer a member school of the league. Still, the TNT guard remains a fan.
“Nakakamiss yung manood ng college basketball, kahit na nasa bahay ako nanonood naman ako, especially NCAA kasi dun ako galing,” said Castro.
Castro said he is impressed with the talent of players in the NCAA, singling out some players during Thursday’s double header.
“Sa Beda yung (Davon) Potts. Sa Mapua yung (CJ) Isit tsaka (Allwell) Oraeme. Sa Perpetual, marami. Sa Arellano, siyempre si Jio,” he shared.
