SAN Beda cager Javee Mocon confirmed he was invited to join the Gilas cadet pool, an achievement he cherishes as his talent is finally being noticed this year in NCAA Season 92.
Mocon said Gilas officials have already spoken to him about being part of the cadet pool that will eventually represent the country in international competitions. They are set to meet again after the PBA-backed national team sees action in the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila next week.
“They talked to us na and they said [we'll talk more] after Fiba (Olympic Qualifying Tournament),” said Mocon.
Mocon said the invitation to join the Gilas cadet pool is very sweet for him, especially after his many failed attempts in trying out for the national youth team. The former San Bed Red Cub even admitted he questioned himself if he is indeed good enough to play for flag and country.
“Actually, I tried out for high school many times. Sa Under-16, Under-18, I was disappointed many times. Pero ginawa ko lang motivation ‘yun. Nung time na ‘yun, sinasabi ko sa sarili ko kung magaling ba ako. I was part of San Beda pero hindi ako napupunta sa national team,” Mocon recalled.
“Now Gilas cadet na sobrang proud. Dream come true,” he added.
The invite came as Mocon is finally making a major impact for the Red Lions in Season 92 of the NCAA. Now in his third year with the squad, Mocon is proving to be a key player for San Beda as he is averaging 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds early in Season 92.
Mocon is happy his patience is finally paying off for the Red Lions as he plays major minutes for his squad.
“Sa college kasi, especially sa San Beda, it’s a process. First year ako, I was a bench player. Second year, I was a sub. Pero ngayon, nagagamit na ako. It’s really a process. Day-by-day, ‘yung frustrations, lahat mawawala kapag naiisip mo ‘yung goal mo. ‘Yun lang ang motivation ko araw-araw,” said Mocon.
