IN the evolving scene of women’s basketball in the country, no moment is mundane.
With big events like Sue Bird’s visit to the Philippines, Sabrina Ionescu’s influence in the local setup, Gilas Girls’ dream run in the Fiba U18 Asia, and the Australian NBL1 stint of Gilas Women’s Jhaz Joson among others, SLAM Philippines published its second issue of WSLAM to celebrate the past fruitful year.
Two covers were unveiled over the UAAP weekend through a small community gathering in Mall of Asia were high school, college, and pro players attended alongside broadcasters and advocates.
UAAP women’s basketball commissioner Atty. Mariana Lopa led the show.
“Is there enough happening for us to have a 002 [second issue]? And for the first time in my life, in the past year, there has been so much that has happened that I had nothing to do with,” Lopa said.
She continued: “Nakikita ko lang sa socials na ay may laro pala dito, may tournament pala dun, and wala akong kinalaman sa mga ‘yon. That’s when I knew that the work that we did is finally paying off because it’s taking off without us.”
Lopa commended the efforts of Manila Hustle 3x3 play for women’s, the SLAM Rising Stars Girls’ Game, and other women’s leagues that unfolded.
“Your generation is doing a great job carrying on without us,” Lopa said of the rising players whose stories are told in the magazine.
She added: “It’s a movement, and you guys have the wheel, and we’re putting those movements to moments like a magazine.”
The first cover featured the Gilas Girls, while UAAP players graced the front page of the second version.
