GAB Dagangon scored the final four points in a closing 6-0 run to lead the Perpetual Help Altas to an 82-79 come-from-behind victory over Mapua on Tuesday in NCAA Season 91 men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Getting a perfect feed from Scottie Thompson, Dagangon scored on a short stab with 30.7 seconds left for the go-ahead basket before making a lay-up in the final seven seconds to clinch the win.
Josan Nimes missed a potential game-tying three pointer that allowed the Altas to take solo lead with a 3-0 (win-loss) slate after coming back from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Heroes were aplenty for the Altas, though.
Bright Akhuetie scored 24 points, while Dagangon and Cris Elopre finished with 16 and 14, respectively.
Thompson, the national team player, flirted with a triple-double after finishing with nine points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists for Perpetual Help, which trailed Mapua, 71-64, before launching a late comeback.
“Doon mo makikita ‘yung character ng team,” said Perpetual Help coach Aric Del Rosario. “All the way, behind kami pero ang pinaka-importante, ‘yung last two minutes. Hindi sila nagmadali sa opensa.”
Nimes had 16 points while Allwell Oraeme had 15, 18 rebounds, and two block shots for the Cardinals, who fell to a 1-2 record despite leading the Altas for the most part of the payoff period.
Oraeme’s short stab with 1:36 left gave Mapua a 79-76 lead before Dagangon and the Altas came through with their telling closing run.
