SAN Beda coach Jamike Jarin lauded his ward Eugene Toba for gambling on an explosive finale than taking the safe but bland path to win the NCAA Slam Dunk contest crown
Toba would have easily won the dunkfest just by converting a simple jam in the second round of the finals. But he chose to go out with the bang and unfortunately missed his ambitious attempt that cost him the crown.
The 20-year-old Toba had wanted at first to catch a lob pass behind the backboard by San Beda teammate Davon Potts and leaping over a sitting Bright Akhuetie. All of his attempts, however, failed.
Jarin says Toba has nothing to be ashamed of for wanting to bring out his best in the dunk contest.
“It wouldn’t be fair to the fans if he didn’t go all out,” said Jarin. “Sabi nga nila, no matter what level you play in, dunk contest, three-point shootout, 5-on-5, you always have to give your best.”
“Probably, he just wanted to give 110 percent,” he added. “He will learn from the experience and maybe win it next year. He is still young.”
