EARL Thompson was expected to make a huge impact on the Altas in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament but a back injury limited his performance in Season 89.
Now fully healed from slipped disc, the all-around University of Perpetual Help wingman seems poised for a breakout season.
“Ginawa kong motivation na ’yun for this year,” said Thompson, who scattered career-highs of 27 points and 16 boards, on top of six assists, two blocks, two steals in the Altas 91-57 rout of Mapua on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
So determined is Thompson that the fourth-year guard/forward from Digos City, Davao del Sur even bucked another injury, albeit a minor knee sprain a few days just to play against the Cardinals.
“Sa gusto niyang manalo, kahit masakit yung binti niya, tumatakbo siya sa oval bago mag-ensayo,” Altas coach Aric del Rosario said. “Nakita niyo naman yung resulta ng pagpapakahirap niya.”
As a result, Thompson conspired with fellow star Juneric Baloria in dismantling a hapless side, combining for 53 points to almost outscore the opponents’ total output.
