Scottie Thompson on Perpetual Help's loss against Letran: 'Natalo kami sa sipag'

    Jul 24, 2015

EARL Scottie Thompson was left weary after Perpetual Help went down against tireless Letran, 71-79, in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Thursday.

The national team member had 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists, one steal, and two blocks for the Altas in 36 minutes of play in an all-around effort which exhausted him in the end after he was tasked to do the playmaking chores for the Altas.

“Sobra, sobrang nakakapagod lalo kapag ginawa akong point guard,” said the reigning league Most Valuable Player, who’s a natural shooting guard.

“Kasi minsa nagco-commit (ng turnovers) ‘yung mga point guards namin kaya no choice sina coach na gawin akong emergency point guard,” he added.

Thompson admitted the Altas proved no match against Letran’s press defense as they committed 27 turnovers and were clearly outplayed defensively.

Perpetual Help only had five steals compared to the 13 of Letran, while the Altas also failed to capitalize on the Knights’ 21 turnovers of which they only converted a total of 12.

“Natalo kami sa sipag,” admitted Thompson. “Nanibago kami sa press (defense) nila pero wala talaga.”

“Solid kasi ang press nila kaya ang dami naming turnovers.”

After Thompson, only two players finished in double digits for the Altas in Gabriel Dagangon (12) and Eze (10).

Akhuetie had his lowest output of the season after finishing with only seven markers and six rebounds after a 20-point, 23-rebound effort against San Sebastian last week.

“Tapos ‘yun pa ang problema namin, halos lahat pa ng teammates ko off pati ‘yung import namin off rin. Dumepensa naman kami kaya lang wala talaga, nakuha nila ang panalo,” said Thompson.

After a close 34-36 score at the half, the Letran widen the gap in the third quarter, 45-35.

Thompson kept it close, 53-58, to start the final period, but the Knights wouldn’t be denied of the win.

Perpetual Help fell at second spot in a tie with defending champion San Beda at 4-1.

“Hindi lang ako sumuko kasi ayaw ko magpatalo sana pero nakuha talaga nila,” said Thompson. “Take charge ako, kayod ko, shoot sila, kayod ako, shoot ulit sila, so parang wala rin ang ginawa ko.”
