TITLE-favorites Perpetual Help and Emilio Aguinaldo College hurdled their respective foes to set in motion their title campaigns in the juniors division of the 90th NCAA volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Altalettes needed an extra set to outlast the Letran Squires, 25-19, 25-17, 31-33, 25-19, while the Brigadiers hacked out a relatively easy 25-17, 25-15, 25-12 win over the La Salle-Greenhills Greenies.
Ricky Marcos paced all hitters with 19 kills, Malden Deldil had 13 and Ryuji Conrad Etorma scored 11 to help boost the Altalettes’ bid to reclaim the crown they last won four years ago.
Aljon Barbuco scored 14, while Walt Amber Gervacio and Cee-Jay Hicap chipped in with 13 and 10, respectively, to propel the Brigadiers, who won titles in 2011 and 2012.
Lyceum got a big boost from the power-hitting Jomaru Amagan in beating last year's tormentor Arellano University, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18.
Amagan had 16 hits as the Junior Pirates avenged their setback to the Junior Chiefs last year that denied the former a spot in the semifinal round.
