THE National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) welcomed to its fold Emilio Aguinaldo College and Lyceum as its newest regular members when it formally ushers its 91st season on June 27 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
NCAA Management Committee chair Melchor Divina of host Mapua said the league has upgraded the status of the Generals and the Pirates this year after both schools met all the requirements to compete as regular members.
“EAC and Lyceum are now regular members of the NCAA starting this season,” said Divina.
The two schools joined Arellano University as the newest members of the country’s oldest collegiate organization. The Chiefs were accepted by the NCAA as a regular member last year.
The 10-school strong league is now comprised of Mapua, San Beda, Jose Rizal, Perpetual Help, Letran, College of St. Benilde, and San Sebastian.
Season 91 opens with the centerpiece basketball event as five-peat champion San Beda clashes with Mapua in the opening game at 2 p.m. followed by the meeting between last year's runner-up Arellano University and Jose Rizal in the main game at 4 p.m.
The games will be preceded by what organizers dubbed as a performance to remember centered on the league's theme for this year: “NCAA: Engineered for Sports Excellence in the New Decade.”
All games will be telecast live on ABS-CBN's Sports and Action channel after the league forged a new, 10-year contract with the giant broadcast network.
A total of seven senior games will be played every week.
San Beda, the reigning seniors basketball champion, is out to extend its dynastic reign to six, while College of Saint Benilde defends its general championship after emerging overall champion last season.
