WITH a chance to knot the count and send the game to overtime, Dioncee Holts looked at the ring and prepared to make his second free throw.

    The rookie missed.

But out of nowhere, Nard John Pinto came like a superhero who saved Arellano with an incredible desperation putback for a 67-66 squeaker over College of St. Benilde on Friday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

With the Chiefs down by two, Holts, the American big man, had the chance to force an extra session after drawing a shooting foul from Paolo Taha with 3.1 seconds left.

The 6-foot-7 slotman made the first charity, cutting the deficit to one, 65-66.

But then his second attempt was a bit too strong.

“I was thinking, ‘oh no!’” Holts said in a short chat with Spin.ph after the game. “But then John was like Superman or something and there he goes.”

“That just showed his leadership,” he added of the senior playmaker, who finished with 19 points, five boards, two assists, and two steals.

“As soon as he made that layup, I was just like, ‘oh, thank God,’” a relieved Holts said as his team notched seventh victory in nine games. “I felt like two hundred pounds was lifted off my shoulders.”
