DIONCEE Holts finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds while rookie Michael Salado hit the big shots in overtime as the duo lifted Arellano to a 100-96 win over Mapua on Friday in the NCAA Season 91 men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Holts scored 10 points in the fourth period and conspired with Salado in a key 7-0 run in the extra period to help the Chiefs clinch the hard-earned win, their third in four outings.
“I know Mapua. It’s a big test for the team,” said Arellano coach Jerry Codinera later.
Struggling in the team’s first three outings, Holts finally had a breakout game to give the Chiefs a big lift against Mapua.
The Chiefs earlier looked headed for a win after Zach Nicholls nailed a triple in the final 22.4 seconds of regulation to give them an 84-81 lead.
But the Cards won’t just roll over and die as Exe Biteng countered with his own triple with 16.7 seconds to tie the game and forge the overtime play, 84-all.
Holts broke an 89-89 deadlock before Salado came through with back-to-back baskets including a big triple with 1:25 left for a 96-89 Arellano advantage.
Jiovani Jalalon had 26 points – half of them in the third quarter - four rebounds, seven assists, and three steals for the Chiefs.
Allwell Oraeme had 18 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks, numbers that went for naught as Mapua fell to a 1-3 win-loss slate.
