ARELLANO turned back San Sebastian, 104-92, for its fourth straight win in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Friday.
Heroes were aplenty for the Chiefs, with Jiovani Jalalon dishing off a season-high 16 assists and Dioncee Holts finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Legarda-based school improved its record to 4-1 and extend the season’s second longest winning streak outside of undefeated leader Letran (5-0).
Donald Gumaru and Zach Nichols ended with 13 points each and three triples apiece for Arellano, now tied for second place with University of Perpetual Help (4-1) and reigning champion San Beda (4-1).
The Chiefs finished with 14 three-pointers in all, six in the fourth period that allowed them to pull away for good after holding a slim 69-66 advantage at the end of the third.
Big man Bradwyn Guinto had 26 points and 18 rebounds for the Stags, who dropped to 1-4 overall.
Despite the winning run, Arellano coach Jerry Codinera said the team is still a work in progress especially on defense.
“I saw what we really need to work on sa depensa namin. San Sebastian put up a good fight. They started strong. Lahat ng mga big time na big man, talagang we are being dominated,” said Codinera.
The Chiefs opened the fourth period with five straight points, capped by a Gumaru triple for a 74-66 lead.
Another triple this time from Nichols had the lead reaching double digit at 87-77 as the Chiefs cruise the rest of the way.
