Clare Castro takes charge as FEU Lady Tams down UE Lady Warriors

    Sep 8, 2019

CLARE Castro led Far Eastern University to a 70-59 win over University of the East on Sunday in the UAAP Season 82 women's basketball tournament at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team member anchored the Lady Tamaraws with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks for their first win.

"Wala silang malaki, so kailangan natin gamitin si Clare," said coach Bert Flores. "Pag nilabas mo si Clare, halos bulilit na ang players namin eh."

Choy Bahuyan contributed 16 points, six boards, three steals and two assists, as Fatima Quiapo added 12 points, six rebounds and four dimes in a game where FEU slowly pulled away, grabbing a 34-15 halftime lead before extending it to 18 points, 53-35 entering the payoff period.

UE fought back behind Princess Pedregosa to cut the deficit to nine, 57-48, with 5:32 remaining, before FEU doused that uprising in the clutch.

Pedregosa tallied a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds with two assists and two steals for the winless Lady Warriors.

"She is a big time player, so we expect her to make those big time plays," said coach Kat Quimpo. "It was sad that she wasn't able to play most of the first half cause of her fouls, but when we needed her, she came out strong."

Her third quarter explosion allowed Ateneo to flip a 52-47 deficit to a 16-point advantage, 77-61, before holding on late to the two-point win.

Kat Guytingco chipped in 15 points, seven boards, and two assists, Hazelle Yam recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals, and Mel Newsome had 14 points and three boards in the Lady Eagles' victory.

La Salle (1-1) leaned on Kent Pastrana, who collected 21 points, five steals, and four rebounds, but missed what would have been a potential winner at the buzzer.
