LYCEUM coach Topex Robinson refused to confirm reports that CJ Perez is indeed jumping ship from Ateneo to become a Pirate in the NCAA.
Sources bared Perez has moved from the Blue Eagles' nest to Lyceum after falling short of Ateneo's academic requirements to play for Season 79, supposedly his first year with the Katipunan-based squad after undergoing residency following his transfer from San Sebastian.
However, Robinson said there is nothing official yet about Perez's move.
Still, the Lyceum coach made it clear a player of Perez's caliber is more than welcome to join his team, which has yet to enjoy success in the NCAA since joining the country's oldest collegiate league in 2011.
“I heard na there are other teams na tumatawag sa kanya. Siguro nga, [pero] not until makita ko siya sa practice, dun pa lang malalaman na nag-transfer siya sa amin,” Robinson said.
"Actually, it’s going to boost the program," he added. "Alam naman natin ‘yung caliber ni CJ mataas. Siguro kahit sinong team ang makakuha sa kanya will help the program. With his addition, it’s going to boost not just the program but the team itself. Hopefully, mag-push through nga. Malaking bagay to bring [in] someone like him.”
Once finalized, Robinson looks forward to a reunion of sorts with Perez, who was his former ward at San Sebastian. But he insisted that he is not forcing the former Stags stalwart to transfer.
"Never ko sinabi sa kanya na sa akin ka na. Doon siya sa kung saan siya mag-flourish," said Robinson.
Robinson also came to the defense of Perez, saying the kid is determined to finish his studies based on their latest conversation, despite Perez failing to make the necessary grade average to stay in Ateneo.
"Ang maganda sa kanya, he still values ‘yung pag-aaral niya. Sabi ko nga sa kanya, alam natin na mataas ang QPI sa Ateneo. Mataas lang talaga ‘yung education nila. Knowing CJ, masipag naman siya mag-aral at gusto niya mag-graduate," said Robinson.
