ARELLANO bounced back from its controversial loss last week after fashioning out an 86-82 win over College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball at The Arena in San Juan.

National team player Jiovani Jalalon had 20 points, six rebounds, and nine assists for the Chiefs, who improved to 7-4 win-loss record.

The victory made up for the team’s double overtime setback to Jose Rizal University last Thursday that saw Chiefs lose the game in controversial manner.

“In fairness, the referees did a good game,” said Arellano coach Jerry Codiñera, referring to the questionable officiating that marred the team’s loss to the Heavy Bombers, 114-112.

“We always remind the players to play above officiating. Wala sa control namin ‘yun.”

The Chiefs, however, still had to lean on Jalalon, Dioncee Holts, and Allen Enriquez in the final period as the troika combined for 24 points during that stretch to pull off the win over the Blazers.

Codiñera also made special mention of Enriquez, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the game.

“Nahirapan kami. They did a good job breaking our press. Mabuti, nandyan si Allen who is always ready. Parang sardinas. 24-7, pagbukas mo, always ready,” Codiñera said.

Benched the last time, Jonathan Grey returned to the CSB line-up, finishing with 22 points in a losing effort.

    CSB fell to 2-9 overall.

The Chiefs lost to the Heavy Bombers in bizarre manner after Tey Teodoro hit a long jumper that was counted as triple for a 113-109 JRU lead before Jalalon answered with a three-pointer of his own to trim the deficit to just one.

After Arellano was forced to foul in a bid to stop the clock by fouling Gio Lasquety with one second left in the game, the referees reviewed Teodoro’s shot and determined the basket was only two, tying the count at 112-all.

But the foul called on Lasquety was too late to overturn, paving the way for the JRU stalwart to hit the game-winning free throws.
