    Woman Fide Master Fronda, Perlas Pilipinas star Sambile named UAAP Athletes of the Year

    LA Salle chess sensation Jan Jodilyn Fronda and Far Eastern University women's basketball star Camille Sambile were feted as seniors Athletes of the Year in UAAP Season 76’s closing ceremonies Wednesday at the Century Park Hotel Grand Ballroom.

    University of the East fencer Divine Romero shared the limelight by winning the juniors Athlete of the Year award.

    The Green Archers also hogged the spotlight in the two-hour festivities as general champion of the seniors’ division for the second straight season.

    Fronda and Sambile not only won MVP honors in their respective sports but the two ladies also sparkled in competitions abroad.

    The 20-year-old Fronda finished 28th in the the 2013 World Junior Chess Championship in Kocaeli, Turkey, and also played in the Asean Age-Group championship in Thailand last year.

    Fronda steered De La Salle to a fourth successive women's chess championship at the same time bagging her third straight MVP plum.

    Although the Lady Tamaraws failed to defend their women's basketball crown, Sambile captured her first MVP award in runaway fashion.

    Sambile, a Hotel and Restuarant Management senior, was one of the Perlas Pilipinas mainstays who helped the country clinch the silver medal in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games women's basketball competitions in Myanmar. Romero also saw action in last year's Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China.

    The awards were presented to the athletes by UAAP Season 76 President Fr. Maximino Rendon and Secretary-Treasurer Maria Luisa Isip of host Adamson University, Carmelita Mateo and Rodrigo Roque of Season 77 host UE, Cesar Saloma and Ronualdo Dizer of University of the Philippines, Rev. Fr. Ermito de Sagon and Gilda Ma. Paz Kamus of University of Santo Tomas, Jocelyn de Leon and Anton Montinola of FEU, Richard Palou and Emmanuel Fernandez of Ateneo, Edwin Theodoro Reyes and Enrique Jose Atayde of De La Salle and Jose Nilo Ocampo and Edmundo Baculi Jr. of National University.

    Mateo also received the UAAP colors symbolic of the transfer of hosting chores from Rendon in a solemn rite in the event that also recognized UAAP athletes who did well in the local and international arena and the league's athlete-scholars led by volleyball stars Aby Maraño of De La Salle and Kathy Bersola of UP, FEU football's Dexter Chio, NU tennis’s Fritz Verdad, Adamson University softball's Elvie Entrina, UST taekwondo’s Jane Narra, Ateneo swimming’s Axel Ngui and Romero.
