SAN Beda brought down Jose Rizal University, 62-37, in the main game of the 88th NCAA men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lions posted a 12-point lead at the end of the first period, before stretching it to a commanding 20-point edge at the half, 35-15, en route to the lopsided victory.
The two-time defending champions improved to 5-2 overall while the Bombers fell to 6-2, leaving the San Sebastian Stags alone on top with a 6-1 record.
"‘They could not get their confidence early. Malas din talaga. They had a very good game plan di lang tumama,” said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc. “Trinabaho lang nung mga bata. They were missing too many point-blank shots.”
JRU gunner Nate Matute was held to just a point for three quarters in the match.
“Hindi mo ma-stop mo si Matute, ma-contain siguro. Oo pero hindi stop. Hindi lang tumama yung mga tira niya, timing na rin,” said Magsanoc of Matute.
Kyle Pascual, who finished with 14 points, led three Red Lions in double figures while Nigerian import Ola Adeogun, Arthur dela Cruz and Ryusei Koga added 12 and 10 each, respectively.
"It was a collective effort. Pag matibay ang defensive effort sa third quarter, mahirap na makabalik pag malaki na ang lamang," Magsanoc added.
The Lions outrebounded the Heavy Bombers, 45-35.
Ronnel Carampil was the only JRU player to finish in double figures with with 10 points.
