PERPETUAL Help extended its winning streak to five games with a win 71-51 win over Mapua on Thursday in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Altas used stingy defense to keep their winning run and end the first round with a 7-2 win-loss slate.
Gab Dagangon had 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Altas got a big boost in morale with a victory over a Final Four contender.
The Altas held the Cardinals to only 18 points in the first half,including eight in the first period. Reigning Most Valuable Player Allwell Oraeme was a non-factor on offense for Mapua as he finished with only six points.
“Eto ’yung gusto naming mangyari,” said Perpetual Help coach Jimwell Gican.
“First quarter, eight points lang pina-score namin, second quarter 10 points. Pagod na rin ’yung mga bata nung second half but still, nandoon pa rin kami sa game plan namin especially on defense.”
Bright Akhuetie had 11 points and 12 rebounds including a slam dunk near the two-minute mark for an emphatic finish to the match.
Mapua fell to its second straight defeat to drop to 5-3 in its penultimate match in the first round.
Darell Menina was the lone double-digit scorer for Mapua with 13 points as the Cardinals came up with their lowest scoring output this season.
