ALVIN Capobres found the perfect birthday gift after helping the Stags snap a nine-game losing streak on his special day.

Capobres finished with 13 points and five rebounds in San Sebastian’s balanced attack to lift the Stags to a 71-55 win over Perpetual Help.

The performance came as Capobres celebrated his 22nd birthday on Friday by leading his school team to a victory in the NCAA Season 92 and ending their long winless drought.

“Sobrang special sa akin dahil lahat nag-step up,” said the son of former pro Danny Capobres, noted for his stint in the Metropolitan Basketball Association with the San Juan Knights.

Although his father is now based in the US, the younger Capobres thanked his dad for lifting his spirits through the Stags disappointing season in the NCAA so far.

“Kahit wala siya dito, sobrang laki ng tulong niya dahil kada laro, kahit bad game ako, minomotivate ako sinasabi sa akin lagi, kahit hindi ako nagagamit, bumawi lagi kahit sa practice,” said Alvin.

After nine long games of being on the losing end, both father and son had something to cheer about on Friday.

Other Stags also stepped up their game to lift San Sebastian to victory as Allyn Bulanadi (11 points), RK Ilagan (11 points), and Jerick Fabian (10 points, nine rebounds) also contributed to the team’s cause.

The 6-foot-1 Capobres said he never lost hope this season even though the Stags suffered one loss after another.

“Sumusunod lang kami sa game plan especially sa defense. Laging sinasabi ni coach Egay (Macaraya) na finish hard kahit natatambakan na. Basta finish strong sa dulo,” said Capobres.

San Sebastian team captain Jerick Fabian noted how Capobres and the rest of the Stags made a big effort in outrebounding Perpetual Help’s Bright Akhuetie on Friday, limiting the Altas big man to nine boards.

“Napanalo namin sa rebounding. Wala kaming malaki. Kahit si Alvin, naglaro ng 4 (power forward). Pantay pantay lang kami pero gang rebounding ginawa namin. Dun kami nanalo,” said Fabian.
