SAN Beda came up with the big plays in the endgame to pull off an 83-81 win over Perpetual Help on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Red Lions won their third straight game to improve their record to 5-1, taking solo second behind unbeaten Letran.
Art de la Cruz had 25 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists, while Michole Sorela added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and had a hand in the huge plays down the stretch.
After a Roldan Sara jump shot, Sorela hit a corner jumper that gave San Beda a 79-75 lead with 1:03 left.
Sorela also came away with the biggest defensive play of the game, deflecting a sloppy inbound pass by Scottie Thompson with 5.3 seconds to play, leading to two free throws to seal the victory.
Bright Akhuetie had 25 points, 16 rebounds, and six steals, while Thompson added 20 points but only hit five of his 13 free throws.
“Both teams came in prepared. Unfortunately, after this game, one has to win the game. We were fortunate enough to be victorious in this match,” said San Beda coach Jamike Jarin.
After going scoreless in the first half, Ola Adeogun found his rhythm and finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds for San Beda.
Perpetual Help led, 39-35, at the half but failed to hold on and went on to absorb their second consecutive loss for a 4-2 win-loss card.
San Beda took an 11-point lead, 65-54, after five unanswered points to begin the fourth.
The Altas mounted a comeback and were able to trim the gap to one point, 74-73, with 1:48 left in the game. But Perpetual Help missed five free throws after that, and finished a disappointing 11-of-24 from the line.
