ARIS Dimaunahan feels humbled to be named as the Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Women's Basketball Coach of the Year, but even in his personal moment of glory, his heart still feels for his fallen player Ashlyn Abong.

“This has been the most difficult week of our lives," he said on Monday during the Awards Night at Discovery Suites Manila in Pasig City.

"We lost one of our own — a beloved player, teammate, and sister — to a sudden cardiac event during practice. Words can’t capture our heartbreak. She brought light, joy, and intensity to everything she did. She will always be a part of our family."

Abong, 18, succumbed to cardiac arrest on Friday during practice which left her National University teammates in a state of shock.

It's indeed a trying time for the Lady Bulldogs team, one that Dimaunahan admitted as they are one with the Abong family in grieving Ashlyn's demise.

It also comes at a time where NU is about to leave for Taiwan for the Buddha Light International Association Cup.

"Right now, our priority has been supporting her family and making sure our players and staff have the emotional and professional care they need," he said.

"This team is grieving — and grieving differently. Some of our players have decided to remain behind to honor her memory privately with their families and loved ones. We respect and support their decision fully."

Despite this tragedy, Dimaunahan knows that Abong is still there with them in spirit and the Lady Bulldogs will continue to honor Ashlyn's life everytime they hit the court.

"The rest of the team will continue with our planned international training trip. It will not be the same — but we are carrying her with us. Every time we step on the court, she’s there. This trip has become a tribute to her spirit, her fight, and her love for the game," he said.

"We are grateful for the overwhelming support from the community, other teams, and everyone who has reached out. We ask for your continued prayers, and for space as we heal — together, as a team.”
