ALLWELL Oraeme powered Mapua past Perpetual, 67-63, in the 92nd NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre on Friday.
Oraeme had a double-double output of 14 points and 24 rebounds for the Cardinals, who clinched third spot with a 12-6 win-loss record heading into the playoffs.
Perpetual dropped to 11-7 for fourth place.
Joseph Eriobu came up with big baskets in the endgame for Mapua, scoring four of the last seven points inside the final three minutes.
Eriobu's baseline jumper with under three minutes to go capped a spirited 15-1 run that made it 65-62.
Eriobu and Andrew Estrella finished with 10 points apiece.
Mapua also clamped down on defense in the final quarter, keeping Altas from making a field goal.
Despite the impressive showing in the last 10 minutes of the match where the Cardinals climbed back from 17 points down against a Bright Akhuetie-less Altas, Mapua coach Atoy Co expressed his disappointment.
"Kasi dumepensa kami nung fourth quarter kaya wala silang field goal. We cannot play that way every time. Maybe because we don't have enough personnel," Co said.
"Concerned pa rin ako. We're trying to correct lahat ng mali namin. We cannot play this kind of game in the final four. Dapat maglevel up kami, di lang konti."
The Altas were paced by Prince Eze, who had 12 points and six rebouds.
