ALLWELL Oraeme notched a season-high in rebounds on Tuesday, but Mapua assistant coach Ed Cordero pointed out the Nigerian reinforcement still has a lot to improve on.
The 19-year-old Oraeme grabbed a remarkable 30 rebounds in the Cardinals’ big 82-77 victory over erstwhile Letran for their fifth straight win - and ninth in 14 games overall.
The win also put pressure on fourth-running Perpetual Help, which currently carries a 10-4 card.
Cordero, however, said the sky’s the limit for the rookie big man, who eclipsed his own season-high mark of 28 rebounds, which curiously, also came in a game against Letran in the first round.
“He’s very raw. Watch out when he matures,” said Cordero, who took the coaching chores from head mentor Atoy Co, who was slapped with a two-game suspension by the NCAA.
Oraeme now averages 19.71 rebounds per outing this season following his impressive output on Tuesday. He also grabbed 22 rebounds or more four times this season.
Cordero said the Mapua coaching staff has been working hard to help Oraeme improve. So far, the Nigerian import has been repaying the Cardinals with superb play on the court.
“We’ve been telling Allwell to be very patient and be very coachable because brighter things are there for him considering that he has not had much experience.
“He is playing beyond our expectations considering that he is a rookie,” Cordero said.
