COACH Aldin Ayo is on the verge of leading Letran to an NCAA championship for the first time in 10 years with another win on Tuesday against San Beda in Game Two of Season 91 finals at the Mall of Asia Arena.
For the information of the younger generation, Ayo is no longer new to winning college titles.
As a player, he was instrumental in Letran clinching the 1999 men’s basketball crown as he hit the go-ahead lay-up in Game One of the finals against Jose Rizal College (now JRU), 75-74.
The Knights were then handled by coach Binky Favis and had former PBA star Kerby Raymundo as their top gunner, along with lefty shooter Allan Salangsang, and heady guard John Paul Prior.
The Knights went on to sweep the Heavy Bombers, 2-0, with an 83-60 rout in Game Two at the Philsports Arena in a match that wasn’t finished after the late commissioner Charlie Badion ordered to cut short the game following a series of fights on court among the players, and in the stands involving supporters of both schools.
The Heavy Bombers were led by the one-two punch of Nani Epondulan and Ariel Capus and were coached by Boy de Vera.
