THE return of center Charles Mammie is a big boost for University of the East especially with the Red Warriors still in contention for a Final Four berth in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, coach Boycie Zamar said.
Although the team lost in Mammie’s first game back from suspension, 65-75, at the hands of De La Salle, Zamar remains confident about the Warriors’ semifinal chances.
“There are still three games, we are not out. We have to go fine-tuning again. It’s all about mental toughness. It’s more than maturity,” said Zamar.
The loss to the Green Archers kept the Warriors in sixth place with a 5-6 (win-loss) slate, just behind five-time defending champion Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas which both hold 6-5 records.
However, Zamar said Mammie’s presence will boost the Warriors’ final push for a semifinals berth.
“Now we are complete,” said Zamar. “I’ll be consistent. Malaking bagay ang pagbalik niya, but I’m always telling my players to be ready.”
At the same time, the former UE stalwart turned coach said he was heartened by the support extended by the school community that led to the downgrading of Mammie’s suspension from two games to one.
“Ang importante now is, I won the hearts of the administration, alumni, and students. Sila na ang nag-apila, hindi ako,” said Zamar.
