XYRUS Torres made sure to quickly recover after Far Eastern University shooters fired blanks in a humiliating defeat to National University, as the rookie sniper showed the way in the bounce-back win against Adamson.
Torres went 5 for 12 from downtown and finished with 21 points in a 12-point FEU win over Adamson on Saturday that kept the Tamaraws in the middle of the pack at 3-4 in the UAAP Season 82 men's basketball tournament.
"Pangit yung percentage namin against NU, so gusto ko ring matulungan yung seniors namin at mga iba kong teammates," he said.
After a 19-percent shooting from the field against NU, the Tamaraws made 40 percent of their shots against Adamson.
FEU grabbed early 14-point leads before leading his side to pull away from a tight 55-50 affair at the 1:42 mark of the third frame to a 68-52 lead to close the period.
Torres says the performance was just his way of repaying the trust given to him by the coaching staff, while also playing the role of the spark for his struggling seniors Wendell Comboy and Ken Tuffin.
"Ginagawa ko lang yung best ko at nagfo-focus lang ako sa depensa," the 6-foot guard said.
"Yung past namin, di na namin inisip yun. Kaagad nag-move on kami at pinakita namin sa praktis kung anong kailangan naming gawin sa Adamson."
And he sure wishes that was the last the Tamaraws have seen those atrocious shooting marks as Torres also hopes to ride this wave of momentum in the second round.
"Siguro kailangan ko lang maging vocal pa at lalo kong iimprove yung shooting at dribbling ko," the 19-year-old said.
