CJ Cansino's transfer saga from University of Santo Tomas to University of the Philippines may have seemed like done in a jiffy, but the 20-year-old said that he was pressed for time and had to make a decision quick.
The reason? The academic year already starting as he needed to enroll immediately to be able to only redshirt for a year.
"Kaya sobrang bilis ng pangyayari kasi kailangan ko magdesisyon para sa sarili ko. Nag-uumpisa na yung klase so kailangan mag-residency. Kailangan maka-enroll ako agad sa school na dapat kong pasukan kasi kailangan ko umabot sa first sem," he told Anong Tunay?!
Since news broke out of Cansino ouster from the Growling Tigers on Thursday, it didn't even take 24 hours for the Fighting Maroons to secure his commitment.
A meeting with UP head coach Bo Perasol and team manager Atty. Agaton Uvero on Friday sealed the deal as he was quickly entered through UP's Varsity Athletic Admissions System (VAAS).
"Kung di ko gagawin yun, two years akong mag-residency. Sayang yung playing years ko kaya ganoon kabilis," he said.
Cansino will take BS Sports Science in his first year in Diliman while training with the Fighting Maroons' Team B.
Still, the 20-year-old reiterated that rushed as the decision may be, it was still a hard decision for him to leave UST and until the end, he hoped for things to be fine.
Time, however, wasn't on his side which led to him making the call.
"Sabi ko nga isang reason lang babalik ako, kaso kailangan eh para sa career ko rin," he said.
"Kung hindi ako mag-decide lumipat, kung maghihintay ako sa sorry na hindi natin alam kung darating ba, dalawang taon ako magre-residency. Isang year yun na masasayang na hindi ako makakapaglaro, so kailangan ko mag-decide agad para sa career ko. Kailangan ko isipin yung sarili ko naman so kinailangan ko mag-decide agad."
