THE second day of tryouts for the Sinag Pilipinas tram bound for two regional competitions got going on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City, with than 20 players showing up.
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin supervised the by-invitation-only tryouts along with his staff made up of Nash Racela, Josh Reyes, Mike Oliver, and the recently retired Jimmy Alapag.
But who attended the tryouts? The list includes an impressive mix of talent from the UAAP, NCAA, as well as the Cesafi league in Cebu that Baldwin and his staff, certainly, will be spoiled for choice.
The MVPs of the UAAP and NCAA, Kiefer Ravena of Ateneo and Scottie Thompson of Perpetual Help, head the list. Also there were Jeron Teng, Arnold Van Opstal, Thomas Torres, and Prince Rivero of La Salle, Troy Rosario, Glenn Khobuntin, and Gelo Alolino of National University, and Mac Belo, Mike Tolomia, and Richard Escoto of Far Eastern University.
There were also Baser Amer and Art Dela Cruz of San Beda, Jiovani Jalalon of Arellano, Kevin Ferrer of University of Santo Tomas, and even Thirdy Ravena and Jerie Pingoy of Ateneo.
Two players from Southwestern University in Mac Tallo and Jasper Parker were also part of the invited players bringing up the number of players who took part in the tryouts to 20 players.
Bobby Ray Parks and Garvo Lanete were not able to join the tryouts at the moment due to injuries while Marcus Douthit is playing for Blackwater as an import in the PBA Commissoner's Cup. University of the East star Roi Sumang showed up in Day One of the tryouts but was not around on Tuesday night.
Baldwin is expected to name the members of the national pool on Friday, trimming them to 16. A final 12-man roster will eventually be named to fly the flag in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) championship in April and the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June.
Certainly, his team won't be lacking in talent.
