JANELLE Mae Frayna, the first-ever Filipina woman’s Grandmaster (WGM), gave the Far Eastern University men’s basketball team a pep talk right after Wednesday’s game against University of Santo Tomas.

Frayna, an FEU product, watched from courtside at the Mall of Asia Arena as the Tamaraws defeated the Growling Tigers, 59-48, to stretch their win streak to six in UAAP Season 79.

Frayna, who got the WGM title during the recent World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan, then headed to the dugout and acceeded to a surprise request to share her inspiring story to boost the morale of the team.

“Medyo hindi ako prepared,” said Frayna with a smile. “I just shared my experience kung paano ako gumaling. Hindi naman ako best player nung time ko. In fact, almost kulelat ako lagi. Pero ‘yun ang nagpagaling sa akin is training.”

Frayna shared to the team that pure determination helped her reach her ultimate goal of becoming a WGM.
