A MASKED Wendell Comboy is hooping and hoping that his fractured nose willl fully heal come the second round of UAAP Season 80.
The 20-year-old Comboy said he suffered a nasal bone fracture during an early game for Far Eastern University in the Kadayawan Festival basketball tournament in Davao City. But he hopes to have no need for the mask in the second round of eliminations.
"I-check namin after round one kung puwede na maglaro ng walang mask," said the 6-foot-0 Comboy.
So far, the injury or the mask hasn't affected his play as he is averaging 8.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in five games with the Tamaraws. Comboy also has 10 triples this season, tied for team-best with Arvin Tolentino.
Although he played down his performance as of late, Comboy admitted having a mask has helped him play without fear of reinjuring his nose.
"Sa ngayon, pipiliin ko na meron (mask) kasi nakaka-go hard ako lalo na sa depensa. Mas kaya kong dumepensa ng maayos. Kahit bangaan. Kapag wala, masyado akong iwas," Comboy said.
For now, Comboy said he will play through with that black mask which has become comfortable for him as the UAAP Season 80 games went along.
"Healing siya. Hindi pa siya solid. Kapag tamaan, baka mas lalong lumala. Pero sa ngayon, kumportable na ako. Nung unang games, hindi," said Comboy.
