RISING big man Arnold Van Opstal and the De La Salle Green Archers look to get back on the winning track as they take on Charles Mammie and the University of the East Red Warriors on Saturday at the resumption of the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Archers and Warriors clash in the first game of a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
All eyes are expected to be on the interesting match-up between Van Opstal and Mammie, the two big men who have had the biggest impact so far on their respective teams this season.
Van Opstal is having a stellar season thus far for La Salle, averaging 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in fortifying the Green Archers’ frontline.
Mammie, on the other hand, has been a dominant force for the Warriors as the Sierra Leone center is averaging a league-best 17.3 rebounds while scoring an average of 12.8 points per game.
Both centers hope to boost their respective teams which are currently in the middle of the pack.
UE (2-3) is seeking its first back-to-back win this season after coming off a 72-68 win over defending champion Ateneo, 72-68, on Wednesday.
La Salle has an even 2-2 (win-loss) record, but will try to bounce back from a harrowing overtime loss against Far Eastern University last week, 79-83, in a game that saw the Archers lose a 13-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation.
Meanwhile, National University and Adamson seek to bounce back from losses at the expense of each other out in the 4 p.m. main game.
The 3-2 Bulldogs lost to the Tamaraws last Wednesday, but not after rallying from as much as a 20-point deficit before coming short in the end, 83-87.
The Falcons (2-2) lost to Ateneo, 58-71, allowing the Blue Eagles to capture their first win after four defeats this season.
Standings: FEU 5-0; UST 3-1; NU 3-2; DLSU 2-2; Adamson 2-2; UE 2-3; Ateneo 1-4; UP 0-4.
