JERIC TENG still sees University of Santo Tomas as a contender in next season’s UAAP cage wars. But for that to happen, Teng said the second-stringers should step up in 2014.
Teng said the Tigers still have a formidable lineup even without him, with Kevin Ferrer, Karim Abdul, Aljon Mariano, and Ed Daquioag still suiting up for the España-based squad next season.
The four were key players in UST’s run in the recently concluded Season 76 where the tigers reached the finals as the fourth seeds before eventually bowing to De La Salle in three hard-fought games.
“I think okay pa naman sila, contender pa rin sila,” said Teng. “Andoon pa rin mga key players like Ferrer, Mariano, Abdul, and Daquioag.”
Teng, however, hopes that the bench will step up for the Tigers to remain a Final Four contender. In Season 76, starters that included Teng noticeably logged the chunk of the minutes.
“I think they’ll be fine pero the other guys have to step up pati ‘yung mga bench players, kailangan na rin talaga gumawa,” Teng said.
Teng is moving to the pros, applying for the PBA draft on November 3 where the son of ex-PBA cager Alvin is expected to be selected in the first round.
Shooting guard Clark Bautista also played his final year with the Tigers in Season 76.
