UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas seeks to avenge its only loss in UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament as it takes on reigning champion National University on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Growling Tigers are also looking to gain a share of the lead with Far Eastern University in th3 4 p.m. match against the Bulldogs.
The Espana-based squad is currently running second behind the idle Tamaraws (8-1) with a 7-1 slate.
UST suffered its lone loss in the tournament last September 19 after Alfred Aroga hit a tough fadeaway shot for a 55-54 NU win.
The Growling Tigers are determined to atone for the heartbreaking loss.
“’Yung mistakes na ginawa namin dun, iko-correct namin,” said UST coach Bong Dela Cruz.
The Tigers, fresh from their come-from-behind 81-79 win over De La Salle last weekend, are also eyeing to extend their five-game winning streak.
While UST has been mounting big comebacks to win games including an 11-point turnaround against the Green Archers, Dela Cruz also expressed concern about the Growling Tigers’ tendency of falling behind in games.
“Siyempre concern din ‘yun. Inaayos naman namin kaya lang, may ganung sitwasyon talaga, Sana hindi na kami come-from-behind. Kung lalamang kami, dere-derecho na,” he said.
NU, on the other hand, is in fifth place with a 3-5 record and a loss could hurt its chances of a Final Four berth this season.
In the first game, Ateneo faces Adamson at 2 p.m.
The Blue Eagles (4-3) will be looking to join De La Salle in third place as they try to bounce back from their 66-67 loss to FEU last week.
The Falcons however, are going for an upset as they look to improve on their 1-7 slate.
