AFTER weeks of speculation, University of Santo Tomas has formally welcomed Aldin Ayo as the new coach of the Tigers in the UAAP replacing Boy Sablan.

In a statement released by the official Twitter account of the school's Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA), UST welcomed a coach who won an NCAA championship with Letran and a UAAP title with La Salle over the past three years.

"As the University moves forward in preparation for the next season, the Thomasian community welcomes the new head coach of the UST Growling Tigers, coach Aldin Ayo," the statement read.

The school also explained its side on the controversial transfer, saying it knew the 40-year-old coach didn't have any contractual obligation with the Green Archers beyond the just-concluded UAAP season.

UST also said Ayo's emphasis on the academic performance of his players as well as his 'willingness to accommodate the university's modest salary scheme, made the deal possible.

"His basketball program that he espouses is based on discipline that gives primary importance to the academic life of student-athletes, believing that athletes who are hard working in their studies are likewise those who are able to handle themselves well properly, both on and off the court," the statement said.

"Coach Ayo is a well-accomplished coach who is likewise more than willing to accommodate the university's modest salary scheme, thus demonstrating his desire to provide proper guidance to his players in this educative process outweighs all else," it added.

IPEA, however, did not provide details about Ayo's contract, although the school's official student publication The Varsitarian earlier reported that Ayo confirmed he is coaching the Tigers 'for the next six years.'
