UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas plans to put under protest its 66-68 loss to defending champion Ateneo in Saturday’s UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Coach Pido Jarencio confirmed the move, but made it clear it was management’s decision, particularly UAAP board member Fr. Ermito De Sagun.
“May mga nakita kasi siya na hindi convincing,” said Jarencio. “Pero kilala niyo naman ako, kung talo, talo. Pero management decision ‘yun. It’s Fr. De Sagun’s decision.”
The school has 24 hours to file a formal protest.
Jarencio, however, was clearly disappointed with how the game was officiated, especially the referees' decision to count Ryan Buenafe’s basket in the final 5.1 seconds.
Initially, Buenafe was fouled while attempting to make a basket, his shot blocked by UST center Karim Abdul. But following a video review of the play, the officials ruled the basket was good as it was already on its way down when Abdul swatted it away.
Jarencio said Buenafe’s game-winning basket was nowhere near going in.
“Meron bang goaltending na kapos ang tira?” Jarencio asked.
The UST coach also mentioned an incident where Ateneo coach Norman Black complained to the referees on the playing court during a lull in the game with 7.7 seconds to play and the Tigers up, 66-65.
Black was visibly upset at the officials, contesting that a foul should have been called when Buenafe turned the ball over off a UST triple team, leading to a basket by Abdul and a one-point Tigers lead. The Ateneo mentor was protesting across the court to the referees as he tried make his case.
“May warning na (Black), pinuntahan pa 'yung officials, hindi tinechnical. Doon ako nagtataka,” said Jarencio.
