UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas formally accepted the resignation of Bal David as head coach of its men’s basketball team.
The announcement made on Monday ended what had been a tumultuous return of David to his alma mater where he served as head coach for six months, including calling the shots in UAAP Season 85.

The 50-year-old David, whose name will forever be synonymous to the 1994 UAAP men’s basketball championship which the Growling Tigers won behind his two clutch free throws in the endgame, could only steer the team to a 1-13 record, in what he later described as a stint ‘destined to fail.’
Nonetheless, the Espana-based institution was grateful for the services lent by David to the team, short as it may be.
“The administration and the Thomasian community are sincerely grateful to Mr. David Jr. for his services, and wish him all the best in his future undertakings,” UST said in a statement.
The stunning parting of ways between the two parties came in the midst of talks San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is set to come in as the full-time backers of the school.
Former coach and UST legend Pido Jarencio also admitted the school already had initial talks with him about a possible return to the team, deferring to the institution to make the announcement whether they’ve already agreed to a deal.
