UAAP Welcome Walk, anyone?
Host school University of Santo Tomas is promising that and more for the opening of UAAP Season 88 in September 19.
UAAP Board of Managing Directors (BMD) member Gilda Kamus shared to Starting Lineup on Friday the school’s plans for the commencement of the new athletic year, with the opening ceremonies set to take place inside the Manila campus.
“We really want to do it again sa University cause we really want to share all of the traditions that we have,” she said. “It’s something that we want them to experience, how we do things in the university like Paskuhan or the Thomasian Welcome Walk.”
UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director Fr. Rodel Cansancio, OP also added that “the decision is both practical and symbolic,” owing to venue availability during that time.
The FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship will occupy traditional venues such as the Smart Araneta Coliseum and the SM Mall of Asia Arena, forcing the UAAP to make necessary adjustments.
“We just like to think we’re going the right direction, keep on moving forward,” said UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag, as the league drew inspiration from this season’s theme "Strength in Motion, Hope in Action.”
Celebration in black and gold
A mass will begin the event followed by the traditional opening program which will then be capped off by a concert at the UST Field.
“Since this is the Jubilee of Hope, we’ll start the entire program with a Eucharistic celebration before we’ll have the opening program. And then to give the students a little entertainment, we’ll have a concert,” said Kamus.
It’s the first time that UST will serve as hosts since Season 79 – one which also saw its opening ceremonies held at the Plaza Mayor back in 2016.
