IT WAS a 22-0 tear that turned University of Santo Tomas’ second quarter deficit into a runaway 80-68 home triumph over Ateneo inside the Quadricentennial Pavilion, to cap off the first round of UAAP Season 89 with back-to-back wins.
The Growling Tigers flipped the game on its head with the decisive burst right on the Blue Eagles' faces, mounting a 17-point lead in the third quarter from trailing by five just before halftime.
The result was a far cry from last season’s meetings, when the two sides split a pair of close contests. UST survived a triple-overtime thriller in Katipunan before Ateneo answered with a three-point win in their second-round rematch.
The Growling Tigers finished Round 1 at 4-3, while the Blue Eagles dropped to 3-4 after absorbing their third straight loss.
