BRIGHT Akhuetie may have escaped a major knee injury but he will remain a game time decision for University of the Philippines in Game Two of the UAAP Season 81 Finals against Ateneo on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Maroons fans can breathe easy as doctors found no major injury on his left knee, though coach Bo Perasol said that they'll still be monitoring Akhuetie's knee strain while he continues his therapy sessions through Wednesday.
The 6-6 center from Nigeria will officially be named the Season MVP on the same day.
"We're assessing him on a day-to-day basis. Scheduled for therapy in the next couple of days," said Perasol in a text message to SPIN.
"Game time decision. The doctor said no major injury," he added.
Akhuetie was stretchered out at the 6:31-minute mark of the third quarter after a nudge from Ateneo slotman Ange Kouame led him to hyperextend his knee.
Just when many feared he was out for the game and perhaps the championship series, the UP big man returned at the seven-minute mark of the fourth quarter. He finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
In a tweet, Akhuetie assured he'll be playing on Wednesday.
"I'll be back in time for game 2 #16Strong #UPFIGHT," Akhuetie said through his Twitter account, @bright_bigtinzz.
