FORMER San Beda head coach Ronnie Magsanoc is joining the Ateneo Blue Eagles as a member of Bo Perasol’s coaching staff, sources told Spin.ph on Wednesday.
An Ateneo insider confirmed that the move to tap the services of Magsanoc is almost a done deal as the former PBA great already attended team practices as an observer.
Another source said Ateneo team patron and telecommunications magnate Manny V. Pangilinan was instrumental in bringing in Magsanoc to the Katipunan-based school to help the Blue Eagles’ campaign this season after they missed out on the UAAP Final Four last season.
Ateneo officials though have yet to confirm the development as of post time.
Magsanoc is expected to be a big boost for the Blue Eagles in their bid to return to the Final Four after winning five straight championships under former head coach Norman Black.
Magsanoc, one of the 25 PBA Greatest Players, guided San Beda to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2012 before resigning after just a season with the Red Lions. He was replaced by Boyet Fernandez, who led the Mendiola-based squad to their fourth straight NCAA title last November.
Magsanoc is also an assistant coach with Meralco in the PBA.
Once the hiring is official, Magsanoc joins fellow University of the Philippines alumnus Perasol in the Ateneo coaching staff, which already had Ricky Dandan, a former head coach of the Maroons, in its fold.
A source said Magsanoc will be helping the Blue Eagles on their offense for which he was known for during his playing days.
