THE University of the Philippines community welcomed Ricci Rivero with open arms on the day the former La Salle cager confirmed his move to the Fighting Maroons camp.

UP president Danilo Concepcion and team supporters Robina Gokongwei-Pe of Robinsons Retail Holdings, Robina Farm general manager Vincent Go, Philippine Olympic Committee secretary-general Patrick ‘Pato’ Gregorio, and Cavite governor Jonvic Remulla led the contingent that welcomed Rivero.

“The UAAP men’s basketball crown has eluded us for over 30 years, and we believe this development brings us a step closer to ending this title drought,” said NowheretogobutUP Foundation chairperson Agaton Uvero, one of the backers of UP varsity teams.

In a statement released to the media, Concepcion said Rivero’s addition “is consistent with the University’s pursuit of excellence in all fields of endeavor.”

“The addition of Rivero helps the Maroons in their efforts to bring honor not just to UP, but the people we have pledged to serve,” added UP Chancellor Michael Tan.

Rivero, who won a championship with La Salle, will take a one-year residency before becoming eligible to play for the Maroons in Season 82 or in 2019.

UP coach Bo Perasol said he expects Rivero to make a great impact for the Maroons.

“He has the skills, work ethic, and character we look for in players who wear State U across their chests. We did our due diligence and took a long, hard look at Ricci, and it’s clear to us that he will be an asset to the team and the university,” said Perasol.
