UNIVERSITY of the Philippines coach Rey Madrid escaped suspension following his ejection during the Maroons’ game against University of Santo Tomas.

UAAP commissioner Andy Jao on Saturday said he has accepted Madrid’s apology and explanation regarding his tirade that led to two consecutive technical fouls in the first quarter of the Maroons’ defeat against the Tigers.

“I accepted his apology,” said Jao. “He is sincere.”

The development meant at least one team in the UP-FEU match on Saturday had a head coach, as Tamaraws mentor Nash Racela is already in Spain as assistant coach of Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba World Cup.

Jao said Madrid also apologized to UST and to Tigers head coach Bong Dela Cruz for the incident but warned that another similar incident will result in a stiff penalty.

“Rules on coaches technical fouls are not automatic. But just if he repeats, then wala na,” said Jao, without elaborating.

Madrid was slapped with two straight technical fouls as he furiously complained to the referees.

The UP coach had been suspended for two games in the first round after criticizing game officials, also after a game against UST.
