    Fighting Maroons off to Serbia for training ahead of UAAP

    IF the Jones Cup is to Ateneo, it’s Serbia for University of the Philippines.

    The Fighting Maroons left on a rainy Sunday night for the European state as part of its training for the coming Season 81 of the UAAP this September.

    The camp to be held in one of the leading European basketball countries, will run until August with the team undergoing twice-a-day practice under coach Bo Perasol.

    The Fighting Maroons’ Serbian training camp comes on the heels of the Blue Eagles’ much-publicized stint in the annual Jones Cup in Taipei where they fell short of a podium finish.

    Ateneo placed fourth with an 8-5 record in the meet that came to a close on Sunday, highlighted by its king-sized upset of the Chinese Taipei national team, 77-76, behind the clutch game-winning three-pointer of veteran marksman Matt Nieto on the penultimate day of the tournament.

    The Fighting Maroons were led by Gilas cadet players Paul Desiderio, Will Gozum and Juan Gomez De Liano along with two of their highly-touted recruits in Ricci Rivero and Bright Akhuete.

    Kobe Paras, who just two weeks ago announced his transfer to State U, begged off from joining the team to be with mom Jackie Forster, who is currently on vacation in the country.
