UNIVERSITY of the Philippines coach Goldwin Monteverde hopes that the UAAP will be stricter in enforcing its rules in the fallout of the alleged spitting incident involving Reyland Torres and La Salle coach Topex Robinson.
The soft-spoken mentor wishes that it would be the last of these untoward incidents in the ongoing Season 87 men’s basketball tournament - as well as the foreseeable future.
“At the end of the day, I'm very confident naman na the UAAP would be very strict na wala nang mangyayari na insidente na pagdudura or something na ganung bagay sa game,” he said.

The UAAP conducted its investigation and found evidence inconclusive, as it only gave stern warnings to the two for “displaying behaviors that do not reflect the values of sportsmanship upheld by the UAAP and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)” for exchanging profane language.

Monteverde said that the Fighting Maroons respect the league’s decision, stating: “Kami, we'll abide by it and I'm sure naman on our part, 'di naman yun basta desisyon lang na ginawa nila. Pinag-isipan nang maayos, nag-meeting sila nang maayos, so sa amin, siyempre, we would respect that.”
And all that, to him, is over and done with.
What matters most for Monteverde is for the league to continue to protect its players and parties involved to avoid any other unsportsmanlike conduct from happening again.
“What's important is siyempre, yung well-being ng mga players, si Reyland, and lahat ng involved dyan. Hopefully lang siguro, hindi na mangyayari,” he said.
