THE UAAP board has lifted the suspension on Charles Mammie after an appeal by University of the East, allowing the Warriors center to return to action in a game against De La Salle on Wednesday.
Mammie was hit with a two-game ban by Commissioner Chito Loyzaga for a third unsportsmanlike foul after he was found to have impeded the landing space of Far Eastern University star Terrence Romeo during the Tamaraws' 98-94 double-overtime win over the Warriors on August 25.
The two-game ban was later upheld by the league's technical committee, forcing Mammie to sit out the Red Warriors' match against National University on Saturday, before the UAAP board stepped in to lift the ban.
However, the board denied UE's appeal to lift the two-game ban on Ralf Olivares, who was likewise slapped with a third unsporsmanlike foul in the game against the NU Bulldogs.
In explaining the decision, UAAP secretary treasurer Malou Isip said the fact that the referees did not call on a foul on the UE center during the Romeo incident weighed heavily in the board's decision to downgrade the two-game suspension.
“Binigyan ng merit ng board na ‘yung incident na tinapakan (ni Mammie) ‘yung landing spot (ni Romeo) was not called by the referees. ‘Yun ang tinignan ng board, that is why it (two-game suspension) was decreased to one game,” said Isip.
The decision allows Mammie to suit up for an all-important match against De La Salle on Wednesday.
Olivares, however, will remain suspended for two games as the UAAP board junked UE’s appeal.
“It was obvious ,so two games talaga,” Isip said.
