UNIVERSITY of the East turned to its stifling defense in the second half to pound Adamson, 99-72, on Saturday in the UAAP Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Red Warriors started the third with a 12-0 run thanks to their pressure defense to take the fight out of the Falcons, who surprised the lean crowd in attendance by taking the lead at halftime.
In all, the Red Warriors outscored the Falcons, 30-12, in the third quarter to break the game open on the way to win No. 2 and a share of the early tournament leas with National University.
"Even though we have won two games, it doesn't mean anything," said UE coach Derrick Pumaren.
After Adamson took a 40-39 lead at the half, the tide turned immediately when Charles Mammie started the third with a slam to touch off a run of 12 unanswered points that opened a 51-40 lead for the Red Warriors.
UE also came up with the highlight of the game when Dan Alberto set up Moustapha Arafat for a two-hand slam late in the third quarter.
Bong Galanza topscored for UE with 16 points, while Roi Sumang chipped in 15 points. Gino Jumao-as added 12 for the Red Warriors.
Frustration mounted for the 0-2 Falcons that Don Trollano was sent off with a disqualifying foul, and automatically suspended for the Falcons’ next match against University of Santo Tomas.
