UAAP scenarios: Who has inside track on last Final Four spot, twice-to-beat edge

FAR Eastern University, University of Santo Tomas, and Ateneo have clinched Final Four berths in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament but the seedings are far from settled.

Meanwhile, the battle for the last Final Four berth intensified following matches over the weekend with National University, De La Salle, and University of the East hoping to catch the last bus.

There's a lot to play for in the last three playdates of the eliminations and here are the scenarios that can happen.

    Top two places still undecided

With just a few games to go in the elimination round, the fight for the top two spots - and the twice-to-beat advantage that goes with it - remain in the balance.

FEU is currently in first place with 10-2 but UST and Ateneo are right behind. The Growling Tigers have a 10-3 record but the Blue Eagles are still very much in the race with a 9-4 win-loss slate.

Let’s take a look at the remaining schedules of the three teams.

FEU: NU on November 14, DLSU on November 18

    UST: Adamson on November 11

    ADMU: UE on November 14

Now the possibilities: UAAP rules state that ties at No. 1 will be broken by a tiebreak based on their head-to-head match-ups, which is to the Tamaraws' disadvantage. While FEU is on top of the standings, the Tamaraws have an inferior quotient against UST, which swept FEU in their elimination-round series.

FEU can even end up in a playoff for the No. 2 spot — in a virtual best-of-three semifinal series — if it ends up in a tie with Ateneo. According to UAAP rules, ties for second spot will be broken via a playoff.

A three-way tie for the top spot at 10-4 remains a possibility. Under UAAP rules, a playoff will only be played for the No. 2 spot with the team with the highest quotient getting No. 1 automatically.

At this point, here's where the three teams stand in the quotient tiebreak:

    FEU: +19

    UST: +14

    ADMU: -25

    Three-way battle for No. 4

Currently, NU is ahead in the race for the No. 4 with a 6-7 win-loss record after the Bulldogs beat University of the Philippines on Saturday. La Salle, meanwhile, slipped to 5-7 as the Green Archers lost to Ateneo on Sunday. Not far behind is UE which still has a fighting chance for a Final Four berth with a 4-8 win-loss record.

Who has the best chance of making it to the Final Four? Let’s look at the schedule.

    NU: FEU on November 14

DLSU: UP on November 11, FEU on November 18

UE: Ateneo on November 14, UP on November 18

With the three teams no longer playing each other in their remaining games, there is still a chance that ties between the three teams could occur. Keep in mind that, under UAAP rules, ties between two teams will be broken via playoffs for the No. 4 spot while three-way ties will be broken via stepladder.

    Spin.ph computed the quotients.

    NU: -6

    DLSU: +11

    UE: -5

Under the three-way scenario, La Salle, by virtue of a higher quotient, will have a bye and await the winner of the UE-NU playoff for another playoff for the No. 4 spot. The Archers won three of their four matches against these two teams in the eliminations.

Of course, a tie between two teams is also a possibility and will be broken through a playoff.
