UNIVERSITY of the East bucked a slow start to beat Adamson, 72-59, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Red Warriors bounced back after losing their second round opener against Ateneo, leveling their win-loss record to 5-5 and grabbing solo fifth spot although UE coach Derrick Pumaren was far from satisfied with the victory.
The Red Warriors trailed 33-34 at halftime before starting the third with a 9-0 run.
Adamson was within striking distance for most of the second half and UE only managed to pull away in the final period.
“We still have a shot at the Final Four. We still have a chance. But we can’t play the way we played today,” said Pumaren. “We are still in the hunt for the Final Four but we have to play a lot better.”
Bong Galanza had 20 points, shooting 4 for 7 from the three-point line, while RR De Leon added 12 points and Charles Mammie had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Warriors.
The Falcons remained winless in 10 outings despite the return of head coach Kenneth Duremdes.
Don Trollano had 18 points while Dawn Ochea finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons.
